on a five-month journey across the united states and lower canada. i document this tore on a map that i painted for the project and also from previous projects called the road map to lost america. on the map i have taken all of the contemporary borders off the map and replaced them with native territories, and then overlaid it with contemporary highways. i have scheduled venue stops at different areas along the tour, from california to south dakota, that will serve as headquarters for my local research. when i was researching the traveling medicine show, i came across this. they had put out an elixir, and it referred to the elements that came out because of the high stress, high-pressure life, mostly because of the industrial revolution. anyway, i was fascinated by the term american-itis, and i thought it did a lot about the stress-related illnesses, and i was impressed that they picked up on that and the 1800's. i did a survey to see if it was irrelevant element today. i have a series of eight painted banners that are retellings of american history. i am particularly interested in tran

. we are miles off of the western shore of canada's hudson bay, an area very inaccessible. there are no roads, but there are people who live along that shore. an enormous barge is carrying construction materials. it is the only way of getting that equipment there as part of a vital supply line. the conditions were fine, but this journey may not have been possible. as the earth warms up and polar ice melts, shipping lanes are becoming accessible for a longer in the year and for bigger vessels. that could mean the north west -- for longer in the year and for bigger vessels. this means the northwest could become an important shipping route, which could be streamy valuable. -- could be extremely valuable. the military health and exercise in arctic waters, a show of strength, and the government has committed to investing more in ships to patrol the area. other countries' dispute what canada is saying. they say the northwest passage should be free to shipping. there are some disagreements. it has a sense of the gold rush about it. remote areas like this are coming under scrutiny

warning. you see the tropical storm warnings through the new england coast and also in to parts of canada. so ocean city not getting it too bad. virginia beach not too bad. one area that got hit last night is kill devil hills, north carolina. phillip jones is down there. how are things now and tell me what sort of damage occurred. >> reporter: right new things are looking better than few hours ago. earl's swirl hear did have an affect. we can show you damage at a shell gas station here. the wind taking the canopy off of the top of the gas station and pushing it in to the building next door. we saw about six hours worth of strong, sustained winds an driving rain that left some roads flood an canopies knocked over. the storm surge got up to the dunes and in some locations flooded some roads. overall, there have been very few reports of serious damage. there is no widespread power outage at any point an no widespread reports of serious damage and we haven't heard anything about any injuries. the mandatory evacuations issued up and down the outer banks have been lifted at noon today. tourists
